Easy Dieting Trick #1 – Focus On Eating

This entry is part 2 of 2 in the series Dieting Tips

To get the most out of every nutrient we put in our body, we have to focus on the food we’re eating. It’s really easy to mindlessly put food in our mouth. Have you ever been munching a bag of M&Ms, went to grab another one, and realized the bag was empty? This is usually followed by the thought that there weren’t very many to begin with. When in reality it’s just there was no focus on what was being eaten.

So here’s the solution. Sit down with your food, preferably in a quiet, relaxed environment. (Unless you’re with friends and having a great time enjoying your meal. In that case you’re still focusing.)  Take the time to notice the colors, the texture, and the smell.  Think about how you know it’s going to taste. This gets all your senses ready for the meal. It helps your body get into a parasympathetic state. Now, take your first bite. Really focus on the taste, the texture, and the flavors. Chew your bite until it’s almost liquefied, then swallow. Note the sensation of warmth or the chill entering your body. Recognize the satisfaction of that bite.

Focusing on your food will slow down your eating process, help nutrient absorption, reduced stress, help your body metabolize food better, help satify your hunger, and make all your senses more aware.

Avatar of Kellie About Kellie

Kellie Hill received her Bachelor of Arts from Willamette University in Speech Communication and a Bachelor of Science from Kaplan University in Nutrition, Health & Wellness.  She has a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner Certificate from Nutritional Therapy Association. Kellie has earned a Personal Trainer Certificate from American Sports & Fitness Association.

Kellie's philosophy is that there is no one-size fits all diet. Because of bio-individuality (each one of us is different), most diets will work for some people and not for others. We need to eat nutrient dense, whole foods that have been properly prepared - real food, as close to the form it was originally grown/raised in, prepared in a way that preserves or even enhances the nutritional value of the food.

She believes that it is important to investigate how the body is using the food as well as understanding what is happening in the bigger context of an individuals life.  She knows that we are obviously more than what we eat and that can have a very big impact on how the body deals with food. Kellie helps her clients identify and move toward their personal ultimate health goals.

Kellie is in private practice in Medford, Oregon. She consults with long-distance clients by phone and internet.
